Homes: Downtown / Kingsmount / Flour Mill / Dunovan

This area is just north west of Ramsey Lake and clustered in communities around the main railway yards. Flour Mill includes some of Sudbury's earliest French neighbourhoods. Dunovan was originally a melting pot with a mix of eastern Europeans. The area has many turn-of-the-century homes, including many heritage homes and many recently restored

The downtown core, north and east of the railway yards and bounded by Elm and Paris, was the city's original neighbourhood, and today has most of city's largest retail businesses and offices. Since the late 1960s, Tom Davies Square and the new city hall were built, and the Sudbury Theatre Centre was completed. More recently, Market Square created a new venue for the farmers and crafts market.

One of Downtown Sudbury's more unusual features is a five-acre park on a hill in the southeast corner of the neighbourhood, centred on a 1907 grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

The Flour Mill neighbourhood (or Moulin à Fleur in French) is just north of downtown Sudbury, and notable for a large flour mill silo, still standing and declared heritage property in 1990. This area was originally settled by Franco-Ontarian farmers and labourers.

Schools

The maturity of the area ensures many schools are close by in both the public and Catholic school boards. Just to the north, is the francophone College Boreal. To the southeast, on the south shore of Ramsey Lake, but still convenient is Laurentian University. Downtown being the transportation hub for Sudbury Transit, excellent bus transportation is available for residents of these neighbourhoods to access all post secondary educational institutions

Shopping

The area has a good mix of smaller shops and services, and for larger stores are residents head downtown to the Sudbury City Centre. The larger "box stores" are a short drive away, heading either north east to Lasalle Boulevard or south to Paris & Regent Streets.

Recreation

Smaller city parks, several of which are wintertime homes to community-run outdoor skating rinks, dot the neighbourhoods. The community's location in the centre of Sudbury gives it ready access to Bell Park, Science North, the Sudbury Arena (home of the Sudbury Wolves), Queen's Athletic Field, and the Sudbury Theatre Centre. The private Idylwyld Golf Course is close-by on the south shore of Ramsey Lake.

Recreation

The areas east of Paris St and north of St Anne Rd have residential areas, which are close to Sudbury's downtown office, business and shopping district. Housing here is a mix of single family homes and multi-fanily apartments, townhoses and condos.
