LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Homes is a rating system that rates the performance of sustainable "green" homes, which use less energy, water & natural resources; create less waste; and are healthier and more comfortable for the occupants.
Benefits of a LEED home include lower energy & water bills; reduced greenhouse gas emissions; and less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. Typically, the net cost of owning a LEED home is comparable to that of owning a conventional home, though as resource costs become scarcer, a LEED home maintains its cost while non-LEED homes have a higher operating costs.
The LEED Checklist helps project teams track their credits against requirements for certification, and is available in PDF and Microsoft Excel versions. The cost of registration and certification for LEED can run $1000 per home.
